Comment on “The Ocular Surface Chemical Burns”

چکیده
We have read the paper entitled “The Ocular Surface Chemical Burns” by M. Eslani et al. with great interest [1]. We congratulate the authors that they composed a thorough review with precious pearls and would like to make a contribution. In case of a chemical injury, if stromal nerve endings get seriously harmed, sensation and pain could be reduced. This would be in contradiction with the severity of the injury and might mislead the physician. Furthermore, while examining such a patient, physicians ought to avoid phenylephrine drops due to the increased risk of ischemia. The authors warn us about lime injuries for the risk of ongoing damage if they are trapped in the deep fornixes. Meanwhile, there is a positive feature of lime injuries that their damage is restricted by the formation of calcium soaps that precipitate and prevent deeper penetration [2]. Another circumstance mentioned in the text is the combined injuries like exploding car batteries. Firework injuries also need to be handled cautiously because fireworks contain magnesiumhydroxidewhichmay cause a combined chemical and thermal injury.

Prostaglandin E Receptor Subtype EP3 Expression in Human Conjunctival Epithelium and Its Changes in Various Ocular Surface Disorders
BACKGROUND In our earlier genome-wide association study on Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and its severe variant, toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), we found that in Japanese patients with these severe ocular surface complications there was an association with prostaglandin E receptor 3 (EP3) gene (PTGER3) polymorphisms. We also reported that EP3 is dominantly expressed in the ocular surface-, e...

Background: The determination of common diseases in a region is a medical and health priority of that region. Ocular emergencies can cause permanent vision loss if they are not recognized and treated promptly. متن کاملThe Ocular Surface Chemical Burns
Ocular chemical burns are common and serious ocular emergencies that require immediate and intensive evaluation and care. The victims of such incidents are usually young, and therefore loss of vision and disfigurement could dramatically affect their lives. The clinical course can be divided into immediate, acute, early, and late reparative phases. The degree of limbal, corneal, and conjunctival...
متن کاملAmniotic Membrane Extract for Acute Ocular Chemical Burns
Background: Ocular chemical burns induce devastating and permanent damage to the ocular surface. Rapid intervention is required for maximal visual rehabilitation. Amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) may save the ocular surface, however it introduces a potentially unnecessary surgical trauma in such compromised eyes. Amniotic membrane extracts (AME) could be a practical substitute of AMT in ...
متن کاملThe role of macrophage migration inhibitory factor in ocular surface disease pathogenesis after chemical burn in the murine eye
PURPOSE To evaluate the role of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) in the wound healing process following severe chemical burns to the ocular surface. METHODS Chemical burning of the ocular surface was induced in mice (C57BL/6) via the application of 0.1 M NaOH. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) mRNA expression ...
